Kentucky Golf

The State of Kentucky has many attractions from the Kentucky Derby, the Louisville Slugger museum, renowned bourbon distilleries, and one of the greatest college basketball traditions in the country. What many people do not realize is that Kentucky is home to some of the best golf courses in America. For starters Kentucky is home to Valhalla Golf and Country Club which is one of only three facilities owned by the PGA of America. The PGA of America purchased the property for the sole purpose of hosting major and prestigious golf tournaments.  While Valhalla is the States most recognized golf course, it is certainly not the only premier golf course in Kentucky. Kentucky is home to some of the most beautiful and challenging facilities in America, and many of the courses offer a variety of picturesque landscapes, such as the Appalachian Mountains in the east, the Ohio River to the north, and award winning horse farms and countless lakes throughout the state. While Kentucky golf does have its fair share of links-style facilities, it prides itself with the more traditional style golf courses that offer tree-lined fairways, small and extremely quick greens; all of which exemplify the characteristics that make these unique facilities unlike any other across the country. Another unique quality that Kentucky courses have to offer is the fact that the climate change throughout various regions of the State allows golf course superintendents to use many different strands of grass on their courses. In the southern and western region of the state many of the courses have Bermuda fairways and greens which thrive in the hot, dry summers. Other regions of the State offer bent, rye, and zoysia fairways and greens which produce ideal conditions throughout the spring, summer, and fall temperature changes. The majority of courses use Kentucky Bluegrass, or fescue for their rough because it recovers so well from the everyday wear and tear and its ability to be cut at various heights all year around. So the next time you plan to book your golf vacation remember to keep in mind all of the wonderful attractions Kentucky has to offer, as well as the countless premier golf courses that this distinctive state has to offer.
